Prime Video has officially canceled the adult animated series Kevin after its first season.
Co-created by prominent actress Aubrey Plaza, Kevin followed the adventures of a talking cat who is left at a Queens pet rescue after his humans unexpectedly break up, forcing him to navigate a new life alongside a local band of misfit animals.
Announcing the “very disappointing” news on her Instagram account, Plaza took a moment to reflect on the changing television landscape. She recalled the early days of Parks & Recreation, noting how supportive executives at NBC stood by the show and allowed audiences to fall in love with the characters despite low initial ratings. Contrasting that experience with today’s streaming era, she remarked, “I hope the machines won’t ruin everything,” while expressing hope that the animated series might find a new owner or home someday.
Kevin was deeply rooted in real-life inspiration, based on a rescue cat that Plaza and her former partner Joe Wengert adopted 20 years ago when they were just 19. Plaza humorously described the process of pitching the show to various streaming networks as a cathartic experience, comparing it to a couple’s therapy session two decades after the fact.
The project boasted a stellar voice cast, with Jason Schwartzman bringing the titular feline to life, supported by a star-studded lineup including Whoopi Goldberg, John Waters, Amy Sedaris, and Aparna Nancherla as his quirky shelter companions.
