Following the catastrophic 2023 strikes that brought the industry to a standstill, optimism is growing for a strike-free 2026 as the actors’ union SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP have reached a tentative agreement on a new labor contract.
Driven by a shared desire to avoid a repeat of previous disruptions, both sides moved swiftly to conclude negotiations, sending a strong signal of stability to the global media market following the recent successful agreement with the Writers Guild of America (WGA).
While full terms remain confidential, reports suggest the new pact will span four years and include a substantial cash injection from studios into the actors’ union pension fund.
Led by national executive director Duncan Crabtree-Ireland for the union and Greg Hessinger for the studios, the deal now moves to the SAG-AFTRA National Board for review before being sent to the general membership for a ratification vote. This momentum follows the precedent set by the WGA’s ratified deal, which secured a 10.5% pay increase and over $280 million in health plan contributions, creating a favorable atmosphere for these latest talks.
With the actors’ deal moving toward finalization, the industry’s attention now turns to the Directors Guild of America (DGA), which is scheduled to begin its own bargaining sessions with the AMPTP on May 11.
