Zurich-based Silver Reel has embarked on an ambitious new English-language drama, The Death of Sherlock Holmes, which explores a mysterious and largely undocumented chapter in the life of Arthur Conan Doyle’s legendary detective.

Backed by major European broadcasters including Sky, SRF, and ARD Degeto, The Death of Sherlock Holmes series delves into the “missing years” between Holmes’ apparent death at the Reichenbach Falls in 1891 and his sudden reappearance in 1894. This three-year gap, which Doyle left untold in his original canon, serves as the central premise of the show, imagining the master detective’s hidden journey across Europe and beyond.

The Death of Sherlock Holmes boasts a prestigious cast led by acclaimed British actor Rafe Spall (Trying, Under Salt Marsh) as Holmes, alongside Deleila Piasko (Transatlantic). As a significant Swiss-German-Belgian co-production, the series is being spearheaded by Silver Reel in collaboration with Sky Switzerland, SRF, ARD Degeto, and Umedia, with international distribution handled by Sphere Abacus.

The creative vision was brought to life by Claudia Bluemhuber, André Küttel, and Pierre Monnard, with Küttel and Simone Schmid handling the screenplay while Monnard and Bluemhuber take the director’s chairs. Currently in production, the series is slated for a 2027 premiere, airing exclusively on Sky in the UK and Ireland, and via SRF and ARD Degeto across Switzerland and Germany.
