A new deal between BBC Studios and TV Azteca has seen Mexico become the ninth market to license the entertainment format The 1% Club. The Mexican entertainment company has acquired the format, created by Magnum Media, to be aired on their owned and operated channels. This licence marks the first commission in Latin America for the multi award-winning format.

The 1% Club is a unique, compelling and humorous entertainment show which tests the nation’s intelligence, based on a scientific survey. Success depends on how you think, rather than what you know, meaning that everyone is on a level playing field and can play along. Whether you’re a contestant vying for the cash prize or a viewer playing against your friends and family, answering increasingly challenging questions correctly could earn you a place in the 1% Club: a group of people who can outsmart 99% of the population.

THE 1% CLUB HAS HAD A STRONG GLOBAL RISE

The 1% Club, created by Dean Nabarro and Andy Auerbach at Magnum Media and distributed by BBC Studios, was recently acquired by Prime Video in the U.S. and Canada. Following the original top UK series produced for ITV, The 1% Club has had a strong global rise, also launching internationally in the Netherlands, Australia, Germany, France, Israel, Spain and Turkey.

The agreement with TV Azteca was brokered by Rebecca Tavares, Format Sales Manager, Latin America, BBC Studios.

In the UK, the second series of The 1% Club, a winner at the National Television Awards, achieved a 4.5m consolidated audience and 31% share for ITV1, with a third series in production. Its play-along live app was in the top three free apps in the UK every Saturday night with an average 235,000 viewers playing along live with each episode. A festive special, which aired on ITV1 on Christmas Day was the channel’s highest rating show and was among the top 10 most-watched programmes in the UK on the day.
