Months of speculation came to an end at San Diego Comic-Con, where Ryan Gosling was officially introduced as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s new Ghost Rider.
The three-time Oscar nominee is set to headline the character’s next standalone film, scheduled for release in 2028.
The project reunites Ryan Gosling with director Shawn Levy and screenwriter Jonathan Tropper following their collaboration on Star Wars: Starfighter. The film marks Marvel’s latest revival of the iconic antihero, who was previously portrayed by Nicolas Cage in Ghost Rider (2007) and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (2011). Together, the two films earned more than $361 million at the global box office.
The new movie will once again center on Johnny Blaze, the motorcycle stunt performer who sells his soul to the devil and becomes the supernatural Spirit of Vengeance. While Eva Mendes, who played Roxanne Simpson in the 2007 film, has not been confirmed to return, her involvement remains unknown.
The announcement also sheds light on Gosling’s recent departure from the previously planned secret Daniels project at Universal. Industry reports suggest the scheduling conflict was likely tied to his commitment to Ghost Rider, making the Marvel film his next major franchise after Star Wars: Starfighter.
