The trailer for the new documentary The Rise of the Red Hot Chili Peppers: Our Brother, Hillel has been released, with the film set to premiere on Netflix on March 20.

The documentary centers on the role of the band’s original guitarist, Hillel Slovak, and explores the early years of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

The story focuses on the group’s formative period in Los Angeles during the late 1970s and early 1980s, when Slovak, bassist Flea, and frontman Anthony Kiedis helped shape the band’s distinctive funk-rock sound. Although Slovak passed away in 1988, the documentary takes a closer look at his lasting influence on the band’s identity and music.

The film features interviews with Flea and Anthony Kiedis, as well as several people close to Slovak. Among those appearing are former Chili Peppers and Pearl Jam drummer Jack Irons, Alain Johannes of Eleven, and funk legend George Clinton.

Directed by Ben Feldman, the documentary explores the band’s origins through the deep childhood friendship that connected its original members, while also examining both the darker and more creative sides of the Los Angeles music scene during that era.
