Amazon MGM Studios has officially commenced production on Tyrant, a culinary thriller that continues to bolster its cast with an eclectic mix of talent.

Written and directed by David Weil, the project has recently added Emmy nominee Paapa Essiedu, Heated Rivalry breakout star Hudson Williams, Grammy-nominated musician Omar Apollo, and lifestyle creator Nara Smith to its ensemble. They join a powerhouse lead cast that already includes Charlize Theron, Julia Garner, and Demi Moore.

While specific plot details remain under wraps, Tyrant is described as a high-stakes, ambitious thriller set within the elite fine-dining scene of New York City, drawing comparisons to the intense energy of Wall Street and Whiplash.

The production is a notable standout as one of the few high-profile films shooting in Los Angeles this year, produced by Theron’s Secret Menu alongside The Picture Company.

The casting choices reflect the significant career momentum of its stars; Essiedu is currently preparing for his role as Severus Snape in the upcoming Harry Potter series, while Williams has recently become a global sensation through the queer hockey romance Heated Rivalry.

By blending seasoned Hollywood icons with rising cultural influencers like Nara Smith, known for her serene, ASMR-style cooking videos, Tyrant is positioning itself as a unique and highly anticipated entry in the 2026 cinematic landscape.
