The sale of American media giant Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) remains a top priority on the global agenda.

Last December, Netflix made an approximately $83 billion deal to acquire Warner Bros.’ studios and digital streaming services. However, Paramount countered with a new bid of approximately $111 billion for the acquisition of WBD, shifting the momentum in Paramount’s favor.

In light of this, a group of 1,000 people, including many Hollywood stars, announced their clear opposition to the planned merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD). The group, consisting of actors, directors, and industry workers, published a joint letter. The letter includes signatures from names such as Ben Stiller, Bryan Cranston, Noah Wyle, Joaquin Phoenix, Kristen Stewart, Jane Fonda, Emma Thompson, Mark Ruffalo, Javier Bardem, and Denis Villeneuve.

The published joint statement included the following remarks: “This transaction would further consolidate an already concentrated media landscape, reducing competition at a moment when our industries — and the audiences we serve — can least afford it,” according to the letter. “The result will be fewer opportunities for creators, fewer jobs across the production ecosystem, higher costs, and less choice for audiences in the United States and around the world.”

On the other hand, it is known that the Hollywood workforce significantly decreased and entered a period of struggle in the post-pandemic era. Additionally, the media industry in general is concerned that this merger will prioritize the interests of the stakeholders who hold the power. It is believed that Paramount’s acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery will harm the industry’s independence and diversity.
