Prime Video revealed an October 7 release date and the first teaser trailer for Mike Flanagan’s Carrie adaptation during a Saturday panel at Comic-Con.

The teaser opened the door for viewers to Flanagan’s re-imagination of the classic, featuring many iconic scenes and modern takes.

Mike Flanagan approaches the half-century-old Stephen King novel that has been masterfully adapted into many mediums in a new and never-before-seen way. The high school experience that has changed in 50 years and the scale of bullying is explored through a story we know well and love.

Bullying breaks the boundaries of school; Alison Thornton, who gives Chris Hargensen life, puts this into words by saying “Bullying can follow you home.” These modern problems take Carrie out of its nostalgic time capsule and make it a vessel for discussing the real problems of today. This adaptation combines crucial and iconic moments in the story, such as classmates fainting on the gymnasium floor and Carrie White’s prom queen moment we see in the teaser, with daily horrors of the 21st century. This new take on Carrie meets with viewers this spooky season.

Flanagan is not new to adaptations. With works like The Haunting of Hill House based on the 1959 book by Shirley Jackson and The Fall of the House of Usher based on the 1839 short story with the same name, he has proved he is more than capable in this field. Flanagan can take a story and not only turn it into a TV series but also enrich it with nuances and new depths.

However, he mentions he was hesitant to accept the offer for Carrie because of the many spectacular adaptations that came before him. That was until he saw the relevancy of the story in today’s politics and how it can break new ground for creating something entirely new. He says that there was a chance for true modernization beyond just changing the time period, “The iconic scene in the locker room is very different when people have phones in their hands.” According to Flanagan, pretty substantial changes have been made. A new point of view awaits the viewers.

While Carrie has been adapted for screens many times, this is the first ever television adaptation. The 8-episode series format allows space to examine characters closely that haven’t been explored deeply yet. The viewer gets more time with each character, resulting in them gaining new dimensions. According to the cast, even characters widely described as villains gain an understanding into their behaviors’ root. Amber Midthunder, who plays Miss D., says every character, even the ones that don’t get a deep dive in the past iterations, gets space. The time flexibility also allows for aspects of the story that were briefly mentioned in the book to come to life, such as Carrie not being alone in her abilities.

This new adaptation with stories about extraordinary women, a modernized storyline and unexpected surprises wrapped production last October. Carrie is going to premiere on Prime Video on October 7, 2026.
