Backrooms is set to arrive as a sci-fi horror film from A24, blending psychological tension with unsettling visual storytelling.

The film stars Chiwetel Ejiofor alongside Renate Reinsve, who gained international recognition with her Oscar-nominated performance in Sentimental Value.

Inspired by viral found-footage videos from director Kane Parsons, Backrooms revisits the eerie concept of slipping into an alternate dimension, originally explored in a 1990s-set short film. At its core is a haunting premise: a seemingly endless, yellow-tinted labyrinth of empty office spaces hidden behind the walls of a retail store. As characters venture deeper into this uncanny maze, the line between reality and the unknown begins to blur, raising the unsettling question of whether something otherworldly lurks within.

The cast also includes Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett and Lukita Maxwell. The screenplay is written by Will Soodik, while the production team features notable names such as James Wan, Shawn Levy and Peter Chernin, signaling a strong creative backing for the project.

With the tagline “Everything Must Go,” the film leans into themes of disorientation, isolation and existential dread. The trailer highlights a growing sense of panic as characters struggle with the fear of getting lost in an endless maze, amplifying the claustrophobic atmosphere. Combining elements of psychological horror and science fiction, Backrooms aims to deliver a tense, immersive cinematic experience when it hits theaters on May 29, 2026.
