Tessa Thompson is teaming up with filmmaker Jonas Carpignano to bring Katie Kitamura’s bestselling novel A Separation to the big screen.

Thompson will star in the film and serve as a producer, while Cannes-award-winning Carpignano (A Chiara, Mediterranea) will write and direct.

A Separation follows a woman who reluctantly travels from London to an isolated peninsula in southern Greece to find her estranged husband who has gone missing. Full of suspense, the novel explores themes of class, race, and fidelity with subtlety and elegance, promising a film that delves deep into human relationships and moral complexities.

Producers include Riva Marker (Linden Productions), Kishori Rajan (Viva Maude), Greta Caruso, and Christos V. Konstantakopoulos (Faliro House), with David Levine (Anonymous Content) serving as executive producer.

Thompson recently starred in His & Hers, Netflix’s murder mystery based on Alice Feeney’s novel, which was praised for her performance and solidified her reputation in literary adaptations. Hedda, another Thompson-led adaptation, earned her a Golden Globe nomination and strong critical acclaim after premiering at the Toronto Film Festival.

Carpignano is known for his acclaimed trilogy exploring contemporary southern Italy through the eyes of marginalized youth: Mediterranea, A Ciambra, and A Chiara.

Kitamura’s latest novel, Audition, was shortlisted for the Booker Prize and is also being adapted for film.

With the recent popularity of literary adaptations gaining both critical acclaim and audience attention, A Separation brings together Thompson, Carpignano, and Kitamura to translate a compelling, suspense-filled story from page to screen, promising a cinematic experience that is both thought-provoking and emotionally resonant.
