The new Lord of the Rings movie has confirmed that the role of Aragorn will be recast.

Titled The Hunt for Gollum, the film is set in the period between The Hobbit and the main trilogy, following the future King of Gondor as he attempts to capture Gollum before the creature can reveal the location of the One Ring to Sauron.

Andy Serkis will serve both as director and appear on screen, while Elijah Wood (Frodo) and Ian McKellen (Gandalf) are confirmed to return. However, Viggo Mortensen will not reprise his role as Aragorn. Additionally, Kate Winslet has joined the cast in an as-yet-undisclosed role.

“I don’t know what’s out there at the moment, but I know there’s a lot of speculation, but let’s just say we are recasting the role and we are on the way to finding someone,” said Andy Serkis.

Serkis described the project as faithful to the lore and world established in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, emphasizing both the epic setting and a deeper psychological exploration of the characters. The film is scheduled for release in December 2027.
