In a historic milestone, the BBC has expanded its international weekly audience by 11% year-on-year, reaching an unprecedented 502 million people across BBC News, the BBC World Service, and content distributed by BBC Studios, crossing the half-billion threshold for the first time since contemporary records began.
A massive driver behind this growth has been the broadcaster’s aggressive digital transformation, particularly within the BBC World Service, which attracted 355 million weekly viewers—a 14% annual increase that accounts for over 70% of the broadcaster’s total international reach. This momentum was heavily supported by a staggering 40% surge in the World Service’s digital audience during the same period.
The network’s vital role in conflict zones and regions with low levels of press freedom further solidified its global footprint, with 76% of the BBC World Service’s total reach coming from countries with restricted media landscapes. Amid ongoing geopolitical crises, News Ukrainian saw its reach more than triple, now engaging more than one in five adults across Ukraine, while News Persian maintained its status as the largest Persian-language media outlet outside Iran, reaching nearly 25 million people.
On the digital front, tailored social media investments paid off immensely, with News Brasil and News Mundo recording substantial growth of 58% and 40% respectively, fueled primarily by strong engagement on TikTok and Instagram. Geographically, India remains the broadcaster’s largest international market with an average of 74 million weekly viewers, followed closely by the United States, Nigeria, Iran, and Tanzania.
