During its CinemaCon 2026 presentation, Warner Bros. unveiled major updates for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, thrilling Middle-earth fans with significant casting news.
Jamie Dornan is set to step into the iconic role of Aragorn (Strider), previously portrayed by Viggo Mortensen, while rising star Leo Woodall joins the cast as Halvard.
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum marks the return of franchise legends Ian McKellen as Gandalf and Elijah Wood as Frodo, with Andy Serkis both directing and reprising his role as Gollum. The ensemble further expands with Lee Pace returning as Thranduil and the addition of Kate Winslet as Marigol.
Developed from J.R.R. Tolkien’s footnotes and set in the timeline between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, the story follows Aragorn’s perilous quest to capture Gollum before the Ring’s location is revealed to Sauron. Written by original trilogy architects Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh, and produced by Peter Jackson, this highly anticipated live-action feature is scheduled to haunt theaters on December 17, 2027.
