Netflix’s record-breaking period drama Bridgerton has officially received the green light for its fifth season and has moved into the production phase.
This upcoming installment has already generated significant buzz within the industry for its modern adaptation of Julia Quinn’s novel When He Was Wicked. The narrative will center on the burgeoning romance between Lady Francesca Stirling, played by Hannah Dodd, and Michaela Stirling, portrayed by Masali Baduza, following their shared period of mourning.
In a historic first for the franchise, Season 5 will mark the debut of a same-sex (sapphic) relationship as the primary love story. Showrunner Jess Brownell emphasized that the season will focus on “queer joy” and the profound sense of “yearning” rather than trauma. Picking up two years after the passing of Francesca’s husband, John Stirling, the plot follows Francesca as she attempts to re-enter the marriage market for pragmatic reasons, only to have her plans upended by Michaela’s return to London.
Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria confirmed during Netflix’s upfronts that the season, currently filming outside London, is scheduled to premiere in 2027. Fans can expect the signature Bridgerton atmosphere to be enriched by classical covers of songs from queer artists like Chappell Roan, alongside new cast additions including Tega Alexander, Jacqueline Boatswain, and Gemma Knight Jones. Furthermore, Netflix has already secured the Bridgerton‘s future by simultaneously renewing it for a sixth season.
