Netflix is adapting Jane Austen’s classic novel Pride and Prejudice into a six-part miniseries. The series will star Emma Corrin as Elizabeth Bennet, Jack Lowden as Mr. Darcy, and Olivia Colman as Mrs. Bennet.
This isn’t the first time Pride and Prejudice has been adapted. In 2005, Joe Wright directed a film version starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen, which became one of the most notable period dramas of the 2000s. Additionally, a TV adaptation was released in 1995, starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle.
The upcoming Netflix series will be directed by Welsh filmmaker Euros Lyn, known for his work on popular shows like Doctor Who, Sherlock, Black Mirror, Daredevil, and Heartstopper. The adaptation is being written and produced by Dolly Alderton, the bestselling author of Everything I Know About Love. Filming is set to begin in 2025.
Speaking about the project, Alderton said: “Once in a generation, a group of people get to retell this wonderful story and I feel very lucky that I get to be a part of it. Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is the blueprint for romantic comedy — it has been a joy to delve back into its pages to find both familiar and fresh ways of bringing this beloved book to life. The book is a gift to adapt — packed with drama and depth as well as comedy and charm. In it lies the opportunity to examine the complexities of love, family, friendship and society, while aspiring to Austen’s delightfully observational voice. With Euros Lyn directing our stellar cast, I am so excited to reintroduce these hilarious and complicated characters to those who count Pride and Prejudice as their favorite book, and those who are yet to meet their Lizzie and Mr Darcy.”
