BAFTA and Emmy-winning British writer-director Stephen Poliakoff is adapting Maltese author Peter Portelli’s historical novel The Order for television.
The project is being developed as an eight-part political thriller series that centers on the months leading up to and during the famous Great Siege of Malta in 1565. Currently in development, the entire series will be filmed on location on the island of Malta, with production expected to commence in 2027 in association with the Malta Film Commission.
The Order is being produced by London-based Little Island Productions and Hopefield, with Peter Portelli, Nick Portelli, Helen Flint, and Neil Chordia serving as executive producers. Malta Film Commissioner Johann Grech noted that this project is a key part of Malta’s strategy to attract ambitious, internationally resonant productions and further strengthen the island’s position as a premium destination for global film and television projects.
Johann Grech, Malta Film Commissioner, said: “The Order represents exactly the kind of ambitious, internationally resonant television drama that Malta is increasingly attracting and supporting. We are proud to be working with Stephen Poliakoff, Peter Portelli, Helen Flint, Neil Chordia and their teams on a project that brings together exceptional creative talent with Malta’s unique history, locations and production expertise.
“This announcement underscores our commitment to building long-term creative partnerships and further strengthening Malta’s position as a destination for premium international film and television production.”
