Mike Flanagan, one of today’s standout voices in horror, is developing a new Exorcist movie, and Scarlett Johansson is set to take the lead role.
Flanagan, who recently made waves with his Stephen King adaptation The Life of Chuck, will both write and direct the film. The original 1973 Exorcist remains a cornerstone of the genre, and there’s already plenty of curiosity about how Flanagan will revisit this iconic universe.

The upcoming movie won’t be a remake or a direct sequel. Instead, it will tell a fresh, standalone story set within the Exorcist world. Speaking about Johansson’s casting, Flanagan shared his excitement:
“Scarlett is a brilliant actress whose captivating performances always feel grounded and real, from genre films to summer blockbusters, and I couldn’t be happier to have her join this Exorcist film.”
The project will be produced under Flanagan’s Red Room Pictures label, with David Robinson producing for Morgan Creek Entertainment and Jason Blum serving as executive producer.
Flanagan, who also wrote the upcoming DC Studios film Clayface, continues to develop The Dark Tower TV adaptation for Prime Video following his departure from Netflix.
