Adult Swim has officially greenlit President Curtis, a new adult animated comedy led by Emmy Award-winning actor Keith David. David made a surprise appearance during the Rick and Morty panel at San Diego Comic-Con, announcing the spinoff series based on his character, President Andre Curtis, an antagonist in the original show.
President Curtis centers on the Commander-in-Chief and his unconventional team as they handle bizarre challenges that Rick Sanchez typically avoids, ranging from interdimensional diplomacy to supernatural mysteries and unexplained phenomena.
The series is co-created by Rick and Morty creator Dan Harmon and executive producer James Siciliano. Stephanie Beatriz (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) and Jim Rash (Community) will join Keith David in the voice cast.
“President Curtis has always been a blast to play,” commented David. “Getting to explore his world more deeply in this new series is a dream. I can’t wait for fans to see what kind of chaos he stirs up when Rick isn’t around to steal the spotlight.”
Adult Swim previously launched The Vindicators spinoff and debuted Rick and Morty: The Anime last year. Meanwhile, Rick and Morty’s eighth season premiered in May, with Season 9 currently in production.
“This is a series we would have greenlit even if it didn’t have anything at all to do with ‘Rick and Morty,’” said Michael Ouweleen, president of Adult Swim. “President Andre Curtis is just that good of a character. The rest of the world the team has fleshed out is super fun and totally stands on its own. We can’t wait for you to see it.”
“President Curtis has always been one of our favorite characters to write — he’s the only person in the multiverse who can go toe-to-toe with Rick and still hold office,” added Harmon and Siciliano. “Now we finally get to go on sci-fi missions from Curtis’ point of view. And with Keith David leading the charge, it’s going to be a wild ride.”
