Mortal Kombat, the legendary fighting game franchise, has captivated fans worldwide for decades and returned to the big screen in 2021 with a fresh reboot. Directed by Simon McQuoid, the film received generally positive reviews and performed well at the box office despite its modest budget. Its success quickly paved the way for a sequel, and now, the first trailer for Mortal Kombat 2 has finally arrived.
One of the most anticipated additions to the sequel is Karl Urban, currently in the spotlight for his role in The Boys, who steps into the iconic role of Johnny Cage. Cage is a B-list Hollywood actor who is known for his corny personality, which will be a fresh look for Urban.
Producer Todd Garner highlighted the success of the first film’s release on HBO Max and confirmed Warner Bros.’ strong confidence in the upcoming sequel, saying, “When we made the [first] movie, Warner Bros. didn’t know how people were going to react. They didn’t know. We didn’t have a huge budget to do whatever we wanted to do. We certainly couldn’t compete with the huge superhero movies by any stretch of the imagination, so we were limited by the scale and scope of that movie because they didn’t really know what they had.”

Produced under Warner Bros.’ New Line Cinema, Mortal Kombat 2 places Johnny Cage at the center of the story. According to Garner, Cage will be portrayed as a character dealing with self-doubt, adding unexpected emotional depth to the fan-favorite fighter. Simon McQuoid returns as the director for the sequel, ensuring continuity in vision and tone.
Joining Karl Urban in the cast are Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion (Shogun), Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero (The Raid: Redemption) Lewis Tan as Cole Young (Cobra Kai), Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade (The Meg), Adeline Rudolph as Kitana (Hellboy: The Crooked Man), Tati Gabrielle as Jade (The Last of Us), Damon Herriman as Quan Chi (Better Man), and Ludi Lin as Liu Kang (Power Rangers).
