In a major shift for the global content industry, Brunico Communications has announced it will discontinue its US events portfolio in 2027, including NATPE Global, the Realscreen Summit, and the Kidscreen Summit.

The decision comes amid ongoing market consolidation and structural changes impacting the content production and distribution business. Brunico stated that the move, while difficult, reflects the evolving dynamics of the global media landscape, particularly in an era increasingly shaped by streaming platforms and shifting production models.

Strategic Shift Toward Publishing and Flagship Events

Moving forward, Brunico will prioritize its publishing brands, Realscreen, Kidscreen, Playback, and Strategy, while continuing to invest in its flagship event, the Banff World Media Festival, which will return for its 47th edition from June 14–17, 2026.

Additionally, the Kidscreen Awards and Realscreen Awards will continue to be held annually, maintaining their role in recognizing excellence across children’s and unscripted content sectors.

End of an Era for NATPE

With a legacy spanning over six decades, NATPE has long been a cornerstone of the US content economy. As both a marketplace and networking hub, it brought together producers, distributors, and buyers from around the world, playing a crucial role in shaping international content sales and co-production opportunities.

Throughout its history, NATPE helped drive the globalization of storytelling, facilitating the cross-border movement of formats, talent, and intellectual property. From the early days of syndication to today’s streaming-driven ecosystem, it remained a key platform for deal-making and industry innovation.

Leadership Transition

Following the announcement, NATPE Executive Director Claire Macdonald will step down from Brunico to pursue new opportunities. Over her 13-year tenure, Macdonald was instrumental in transforming Realscreen Summit into a leading global marketplace for unscripted television and expanding the brand internationally.

She also played a pivotal role in revitalizing the NATPE franchise, reestablishing its presence in key markets such as Miami and Budapest.

Looking Ahead

Despite the closure of its event portfolio, Brunico emphasized its continued commitment to the global content community through journalism, awards, and curated industry gatherings. The company aims to sustain the conversations, connections, and insights that have long defined its role within the entertainment ecosystem.

As the industry undergoes rapid transformation, the end of NATPE Global marks not just the closure of a historic market, but a broader shift in how content businesses connect, collaborate, and evolve.
