Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has confirmed that Margot Robbie is still on board with the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, as Disney continues developing the next installment of its multibillion-dollar series.
The franchise, which has generated more than $4.5 billion at the global box office, has been on pause since 2017’s Dead Men Tell No Tales. Bruckheimer says work is actively progressing on a new film, though the script is still being finalized.
“We’re working on a script. It’s always on the page; if we don’t have it on the page, it’s not gonna get on the screen,” Bruckheimer told The Wrap. “We had two scripts at one point, and then one kinda dropped out, and then we went on with the other one.”
When asked if Robbie’s project was the one abandoned, he clarified: “Well, she’s still involved.” Bruckheimer added that Ted Elliott, co-writer of the first four Pirates films, is shaping the current script with additional writers contributing.
At the same time, there is still a possibility that Johnny Depp could return to the franchise in his iconic role as Captain Jack Sparrow. Discussions have reportedly taken place with the actor for what is currently being referred to as Pirates of the Caribbean 6.
Depp stepped away from Hollywood following his widely publicized legal battles with ex-wife Amber Heard, but he has since expressed interest in returning to the industry and taking on new projects. Another franchise star, Orlando Bloom, also said in a recent interview that he would be open to reprising his role.

Although no release date has been set for the new Pirates of the Caribbean film, development is actively underway, with Margot Robbie confirmed to star.
