Toronto-based Neshama Entertainment and LMM Productions are developing a new limited drama series titled Lucy Maud, which explores the life of Lucy Maud Montgomery, the world-renowned Canadian author of the classic novel Anne of Green Gables.
The project features a unique casting coup, starring two iconic actresses who have previously brought the character of Anne Shirley to life: Megan Follows, the star of the beloved 1985 miniseries, and Amybeth McNulty, the lead of Netflix’s Anne with an E.
Written by Susan Coyne (Daisy Jones & The Six), the series also features Follows as a producer, with Fox Entertainment Global slated to handle international distribution if the project officially moves forward. Rather than reflecting the idyllic, pastoral world associated with her famous books, the narrative will delve into the heavy pressures of fame, creative ambition, and complex family dynamics, ultimately exposing the darker and more surprising truths of Montgomery’s personal life.
“Everyone knows Anne Shirley. Almost nobody knows Lucy Maud Montgomery. The truth is far more complicated, far more fascinating and long overdue,” said executive producer Leckie.
Brook Peters, senior VP of sales and business development at Neshama, added: “Lucy Maud Montgomery built a world that belongs to everyone – and audiences from Tokyo to Toronto have never let go of it. Now we get to show them something thrillingly unexpected inside that world.”
