Beta Film is taking its successful royal drama Maxima beyond its original series format, with a third season, a feature film about former Dutch Queen Beatrix and a new spin-off all in the pipeline. The franchise has already been sold to more than 85 territories worldwide.
Production on Maxima Season 3 is set to begin next week in the Netherlands, with Natali Anna taking over the role of Queen Máxima and Ruben Brinkman playing King Willem-Alexander.
What Will Happen in Maxima Season 3?
The upcoming season will move the story into the early years of Máxima’s reign as Queen of the Netherlands. Alongside Willem-Alexander, she will face the pressures and responsibilities that come with her new position at the centre of the Dutch monarchy.
The third season expands the flagship drama to 18 one-hour episodes overall. Saskia Diesing, Hiba Vink and Maria Philips are directing, with scripts from Rifka Lodeizen, Daan Gielis and Saskia Diesing.
The series is commissioned by RTL for Dutch streaming service Videoland and produced by Rachel van Bommel for Millstreet Films, in co-production with FBO and Beta Film.
What Is the Maxima Spin-Off About?
Before Season 3 arrives, the franchise will introduce its first spin-off, The Other Royals. The five-part limited series is currently in post-production and is scheduled to premiere next year.
Rather than focusing on Máxima, the spin-off follows Mabel Wisse Smit and Margarita de Bourbon de Parme, examining their relationships and experiences within the Dutch royal family.
As their personal lives come under increasing public scrutiny, the series explores the intersection of romance, scandal, political tensions and palace intrigue.
The Other Royals – A Maxima Story consists of five one-hour episodes and is produced by Millstreet Films in co-production with FBO and Beta Film.
What Is Beta Film’s Beatrix Movie About?
The Maxima universe is also heading to the big screen with Beatrix, currently in development as the franchise’s first feature film.
The project will centre on former Queen Beatrix, who ruled the Netherlands for more than three decades. Set roughly 20 years into her reign, the film will explore the personal demands of life as a monarch and Beatrix’s relationship with art.
Her passion for art becomes an important part of the story as she searches for a sense of freedom and a stronger connection with her own identity beyond her royal role.

With its third season, spin-off and feature film, Maxima is developing into a multi-format royal drama franchise for Beta Film. The original series has already secured sales across more than 85 territories, providing an international foundation for the new productions.
The franchise has received production support from the Dutch Film Fund Production Incentive, Creative Europe MEDIA, the Belgian Tax Shelter and the Incentive Measure Den Haag/Rotterdam.
Beta Film will continue to handle international distribution across the Maxima universe as the company expands the property into multiple stories and formats.
