Sony is moving ahead with the third installment of the 28 Years Later trilogy, following the strong fan response to early screenings of 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, which arrives in theaters over MLK weekend on January 16, 2026. The third film does not yet have an official title.

Cillian Murphy, who returns in The Bone Temple and serves as an executive producer on both films, is now in talks to join the third movie. Franchise creator Alex Garland is currently writing the script.

When Sony secured rights to the trilogy, the studio held an option for the third film but chose not to greenlight it immediately. Instead, the first two installments were shot back-to-back, with Danny Boyle directing the first and Nia DaCosta taking on the second. Boyle has previously said he’d like to return for film three.

The revival has been a major success for Sony: 28 Years Later opened to $30 million in June and went on to earn $70.4 million domestically and $151.3 million globally, the highest-grossing entry in the franchise. The series began in 2002 with Boyle and Garland’s 28 Days Later, followed by 28 Weeks Later in 2007. Altogether, the films have generated nearly $300 million worldwide.

Sony declined to comment on the developing third film.
