Netflix in Canada is set to adapt Carley Fortune’s romance novel This Summer Will Be Different into a ten-episode series, further expanding the platform’s Canadian content slate.

This Summer Will Be Different adaptation will be filmed on Prince Edward Island and in Toronto, capturing the sun-soaked, summery atmosphere that defines the novel. The story follows a young woman navigating her twenties and her first real love, which unexpectedly blossoms with her best friend’s brother, a person she was never supposed to fall for.

The series is created and showrun by Dane Clark, known for Suze and One More Time, alongside Linsey Stewart, whose credits include Workin’ Moms and North of North. Montreal-based Sphere Media is producing the project, with executive producers Jennifer Kawaja (Sort Of, Wayward) and Elise Cousineau (Cardinal, Small Achievable Goals) guiding the adaptation.

This initiative marks another step in Netflix’s commitment to Canadian productions, following its commissioning of the limited series Wayward and the period romance drama The Granville Girls.

Netflix reports that domestic viewing of Canadian content has grown nearly 20% since the rollout of its Canadian slate in 2025, with almost 65% of subscribers watching Canadian titles that year. According to Danielle Woodrow and Tara Woodbury, Netflix’s directors of content in Canada, This Summer Will Be Different was developed with a focus on honoring Fortune’s passionate fanbase while bringing the novel’s vibrant story of love and self-discovery to life on screen.
