In a groundbreaking move for the New Zealand film industry, global stars Taika Waititi, Jason Momoa, and Cliff Curtis have acquired the Auckland-based Studio West through their investment firm, Ariki Group.

This acquisition marks a historic milestone as the country’s first Polynesian-led and creative-owned production studio. Established in 1997 and previously operated by Kay and Glenn Howe of Enki Enterprises for over a decade, Studio West is one of New Zealand’s oldest active production facilities.

Waititi said: “I’m thrilled to be a part of this exciting venture, especially with this being a Polynesian-led studio. We’re bringing our experience from working overseas back home to create jobs and opportunities for the industry here, and importantly, for Polynesian talent and creators. It’s about ownership, creative control, and building a space where our community can lead in the industry.”

Studio West has a prestigious track record, hosting major international projects such as Apple TV+’s Chief of War, Disney’s Zombie4, and Blumhouse’s M3GAN 2. The new owners aim to bring their extensive international experience back home to foster local employment, provide opportunities for Polynesian talent, and champion indigenous storytelling.

Spanning eight acres, the comprehensive facility of Studio West features five sound and warehouse stages, production offices, an art department, workshops, and a sprawling base camp area, positioning it as a premier hub for both domestic and global productions.

Momoa, who has been a key international advocate in bringing productions to be filmed in New Zealand said of the venture: “New Zealand has become a place that feels like home to me: creatively, culturally, and spiritually. There’s a deep respect for story, for land, for community and that’s something I am drawn to. What excites me the most is the opportunity to build something lasting that supports local crews, nurtures talent, and creates pathways for the next generation of storytellers. I am proud to be part of that journey, and to help champion stories that deserve to be seen and heard around the world.”
