The universe of the beloved animated series Rick and Morty is set to expand with a feature-length theatrical film under Warner Bros.

While the project has generated massive anticipation among fans, it has also drawn significant attention for choosing a familiar face to take the helm. Jacob Hair, who has served as a director and supervising director on the show since 2019, is currently in talks to direct the animated feature. Series co-creator Dan Harmon confirmed that they chose not to shop around for outside talent, opting instead to promote from within the show’s core team.

Although plot details remain under wraps as the Rick and Morty film is in early development, Harmon shared insights into their overall vision for the big-screen adaptation. Rather than trying to earn its feature status through dramatic canonical tone shifts, the creative team intends to spend extra money to deliver a 90-minute, higher-budget, “super badass episode of Rick and Morty.”

Alongside this feature film development, the television series continues its run at full steam. Ahead of its season nine premiere this coming Sunday, the Emmy-winning show has already been renewed through season 12, maintaining its momentum following the 2023 recasting of the titular characters after the network severed ties with co-creator Justin Roiland.
