Beta Film is bringing Queen Silvia, a new drama inspired by the real-life romance between Sweden’s King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia, to MIPCOM Cannes 2026 for its world premiere.

The six-hour series will receive a special screening at Cannes on October 13, giving international buyers and festival audiences an early look at the upcoming royal drama. The first episode will be followed by a Q&A with stars Alicia von Rittberg and Edvin Endre, alongside members of the creative team.

What Is Queen Silvia About?

Set between Munich, Stockholm and the French Riviera, the series follows Silvia Sommerlath, a German-Brazilian interpreter whose life changes after she meets Sweden’s future king during the 1972 Munich Olympics.

Alicia von Rittberg plays Silvia, while Edvin Endre portrays the young Crown Prince Carl Gustaf. Their relationship develops into a romance that faces the pressures of royal tradition, public attention and the expectations surrounding the Swedish monarchy.

Rather than focusing solely on the fairytale aspects of a royal romance, Queen Silvia explores Silvia’s transition into a world she never expected to enter and the challenge of maintaining her identity within it.

Who Stars in Queen Silvia?

Alongside von Rittberg and Endre, the series features a creative team led by director and co-writer Miguel Alexandre. Lisa Hofer and Pauline Wolff also contributed to the scripts, with Carsten Kelber serving as showrunner.

The series is produced by Pyjama Pictures and Unlimited Stories for Prime Video DACH and Nordics and German broadcaster SAT.1. Beta Film is handling international distribution.

When Will Queen Silvia Be Released?

Following its MIPCOM premiere, Queen Silvia is scheduled to launch on Prime Video in 2027 across the DACH region and the Nordics. SAT.1 will air the series in Germany four weeks after its streaming debut.

The MIPCOM screening marks the first major international showcase for the series as Beta Film begins introducing the royal drama to the global television market.
