Baby Reindeer star Richard Gadd has joined the cast of Porto Rico, an upcoming historical drama inspired by the true story of Puerto Rican revolutionary José Maldonado Román, also known as Águila Blanca (White Eagle).
A story rooted in Puerto Rico’s history
The film is set against the late 19th-century struggle against colonial rule and follows Maldonado Román, who led a group of ex-convicts in opposition to Spanish and American authorities. The story will also explore the 1898 US takeover of Puerto Rico from Spain, an event that led to the island being referred to as Porto Rico.
Porto Rico stars Benito Martínez Ocasio (Bad Bunny) alongside Viggo Mortensen and Edward Norton, with Gadd joining a large international cast that also includes Rhenzy Feliz, Ismael Cruz Córdova, Daniel Brühl, Rubén Blades, Alberto Guerra, Marcel Ruiz, Arian Cartaya, Óscar Jaenada, Carmen Machi and Luis Tosar.
The screenplay was written by Alexander Dinelaris and Puerto Rican rapper René Pérez Joglar (Residente), who is also making his feature directorial debut. Production is currently underway in the Dominican Republic.
