Netflix is developing a new series centered on the passionate and turbulent lives of renowned artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera.

The series will explore their relationship, intertwined with love, betrayal and art, while also placing it within the broader political, social and artistic climate of their time.

The story focuses on Frida Kahlo’s refusal to remain merely a “muse,” instead choosing to reclaim her voice and express her own pain and identity, while also portraying Diego Rivera’s struggle to sustain his creative genius amid his inner contradictions.

The narrative presents Kahlo and Rivera’s relationship as both a source of creative energy and a space of conflict, one that also unfolds as a public spectacle under constant scrutiny.

The project is metaphorically described as “a bomb wrapped in silk,” promising an intense, explosive and emotionally powerful story on both a personal and societal level.

The series is directed by Patricia Riggen and Gabriel Ripstein, and produced by Mónica Lozano (Alebrije Producciones). The screenplay is adapted from the work of Claire Berest, with María Renée Prudencio serving as head writer.

Ultimately, the series aims to explore the role of art as a means of coping with pain, while reflecting on the timeless human drive to live, love and create.
