The BBC has officially announced its latest high-stakes drama, Dragon Slayers, a series chronicling the life and legacy of Harold Evans, one of the most iconic figures in British journalism history.

Starring Emmy-winner Matthew Rhys (The Americans) as the legendary Sunday Times editor, the drama captures the golden age of investigative reporting throughout the 1970s. Penned by Peter Bowker (The A Word), the screenplay draws on extensive research, published accounts, and interviews with those closest to him, including his widow, the celebrated editor and author Tina Brown.

The narrative follows Evans and his tenacious team as they navigate some of the 20th century’s most profound investigations, ranging from the grueling legal fight for Thalidomide victims to uncovering the systemic failures behind the DC-10 air disaster. The series also delves into the high-tension exposure of Kim Philby, one of history’s most successful spies.

Produced by the creative forces behind the acclaimed Mr Bates vs the Post Office and directed by Al Mackay, Dragon Slayers is described by BBC Drama Director Lindsay Salt as a “rollercoaster story” that remains strikingly relevant today. Through the lens of Evans’ uncompromising pursuit of truth, Dragon Slayers promises a powerful exploration of the power of the press and its enduring impact on society.
