One of the most popular titles in the gaming world, God of War, is confirmed to be adapted to a TV series by Prime Video. New details have surfaced about the series, which will focus on God of War: Ragnarök (2022), the latest game in the franchise that follows Kratos and his son Atreus, who embark on a quest to prevent the destruction of the nine realms.
The game franchise developed by Santa Monica Studio, under the PlayStation brand, centers on the Spartan warrior Kratos and is known for its gripping story rooted in ancient worlds and mythology. Being one of PlayStation’s most acclaimed titles, there are high expectations surrounding the adaptation.

The God of War adaptation was first announced back in 2022. However, the project faced setbacks during development, prompting a new direction. As a result, Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, Outlander, and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) was brought on board. Meanwhile, previous showrunner Rafe Judkins, along with writers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus, have left the project.

Ronald D. Moore commented on the production process, saying:
“The tone of the show is trying to emulate the tone of the game, which is that there’s this epic journey, this heartfelt story of these two men setting out on this thing to honor the memory of his wife, Atreus’ mother. So it has this emotional heart, but there’s this sense of history of who Kratos is, this mystery about his past, what he represents, the emotions that he’s going through. So there’s a weight to it, but not so much weight that there’s no enjoyment along the way. There’s spectacle, and there are lots of things going on in this world.
We want to honor the game and what they laid out for Atreus’ journey. Here’s a young man who doesn’t know his father very well, who sets out on this mission, and along the way, they learn about each other.”
In addition, Prime Video has already greenlit a second season of God of War. Receiving a renewal before the first season proves the project’s strong potential. However, Prime Video has previously faced heavy criticism from fans over its fantasy series, such as The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and The Wheel of Time. As a result, there is considerable curiosity about how God of War will be received.
