Former Paramount Co-CEO Brian Robbins and his animation company Big Shot Pictures have launched an ambitious reboot of the Alvin & the Chipmunks franchise.
As part of a partnership with Bagdasarian Productions, the owner of the brand, Big Shot Pictures has acquired a 25% stake in the property.
The new strategy aims to introduce Alvin and his friends to a new generation of audiences by focusing first on digital platforms. The initial phase will see the production of YouTube and social media content featuring Alvin and the Chipmunks as influencers, reacting to trends, current events, and viral videos.
Following the digital rollout, a new theatrical feature film is planned for release in 2028, coinciding with the franchise’s 70th anniversary. Created by Ross Bagdasarian in 1958, Alvin & the Chipmunks has since grown into a global family entertainment brand spanning television series, feature films, toys, and a wide range of licensed merchandise.
Founded by Brian Robbins earlier this year, Big Shot Pictures also has a first-look theatrical deal with Sony. In addition to Alvin & the Chipmunks, the company is developing an adaptation of Kay Thompson’s Eloise book series, an anime project with influencer IShowSpeed, and a short-form animated series based on The Bucket List Family.
Commenting on the partnership, Robbins said he is thrilled to be working with the Bagdasarian family to bring Alvin and the Chipmunks into the 21st century with the scale, creativity, and energy the beloved franchise deserves.
