Following her work on Netflix’s How to Get to Heaven from Belfast, Ava Pickett is bringing her next project to television with 1536, a six-part drama series that will be co-produced by HBO and the BBC.
Pickett, who also contributed to the writing of the series alongside the creative team behind Derry Girls, will serve as writer, showrunner and executive producer.
Produced by Drama Republic, 1536 will be directed by Molly Manners, who will also executive produce the series. Set in Tudor England during the collapse of Henry VIII’s relationship with Anne Boleyn, the drama explores the impact of decisions made by those in power on working-class women living far from the centre of the court.
Blending dark comedy with a story of friendship and sisterhood, the series will explore themes of power, patriarchy and a society undergoing profound change. Pickett expressed her excitement about bringing the project to HBO, the BBC and Drama Republic, describing the collaboration as an opportunity to introduce its story of power, patriarchy and friendship to a new audience.
