Japanese broadcaster TV Asahi is seeing growing momentum behind its new unscripted competition format DUAL² (pronounced “Dual Squared”), as the series continues to build audience engagement in Japan while attracting attention from international buyers and format executives.

Premiering on May 17, the eight-week competition series has emerged as one of TV Asahi’s most talked-about new formats, combining elite athletes, strategic gameplay and hidden “life point” mechanics in a visually driven format designed for multiplatform audiences.

Featuring Olympic champions Kosuke Hagino, Sena Irie and Naohisa Takato, alongside world-medalist figure skater Narumi Takahashi, DUAL² blends physical challenges with psychological strategy, creating a distinctive viewing experience that has resonated with audiences across multiple demographics.

Strong Ratings and Social Media Growth

Since its launch, DUAL² has recorded an upward trend in viewership, performing particularly well among younger audiences. Recent episodes ranked first in their timeslot among men aged 20-34, while the show has also topped rankings among teenage viewers.

The format’s unique gameplay has translated successfully to digital platforms. A clip featuring Narumi Takahashi’s standout performance in the “CUBE MAZE” challenge generated more than 1.42 million Instagram views, helping drive broader online engagement.

Across social media channels and streaming platforms including TVer and TELASA, DUAL² has surpassed 10 million total views and impressions. Industry observers note that the show’s mix of competition, strategy and celebrity commentary has contributed significantly to audience retention beyond its linear broadcast window.

Growing Interest From International Buyers

Following presentations at the LA Screenings and the Paris Unscripted Showcase, DUAL² has begun attracting attention from the global content marketplace.

DUAL² follows ten athletes competing in physically and mentally demanding challenges while carrying hidden “life points” that can dramatically alter the outcome of the game. Its language-independent structure and highly visual storytelling have positioned it as a format with strong adaptation potential across international markets.

TV Asahi’s International Business Development team is currently exploring opportunities for format licensing, local remakes and co-production partnerships throughout the Americas, Europe and Asia-Pacific territories.

“We are thrilled by the initial response to DUAL²,” TV Asahi said in a statement. “Seeing both viewers and international partners respond to the psychological and strategic depth of the format has been extremely encouraging. We believe DUAL² has the potential to travel globally as a universal competition concept that audiences everywhere can immediately understand and enjoy.”

As demand for scalable, globally adaptable unscripted formats continues to grow, DUAL² could become the latest Japanese entertainment property to make an impact on the international stage.
