Leading Japanese broadcaster TV Asahi has officially unveiled its latest unscripted format, DUAL² (Dual Squared), ahead of the highly anticipated LA Screenings 2026.

As part of the network’s strategic “Global Challenge” initiative, the series is designed as a bold, internationally adaptable IP ready for the worldwide market.

The high-octane series is set to premiere on May 17 on TV Asahi’s terrestrial channel, airing as an eight-week run of 30-minute episodes. In addition to its linear broadcast, the show will be available on the SVOD platform TELASA and Japan’s premier catch-up service, TVer.

A High-Concept Fusion of Strategy and Survival

DUAL² redefines the physical competition genre by seamlessly merging athletic endurance with complex strategic gameplay and relentless psychological pressure. The format’s defining feature is its revolutionary signature twist: competitors’ Life Points are displayed in real time to everyone, except the players themselves.

This unique mechanic creates a high-stakes environment of total uncertainty, forcing participants to take extreme risks while managing dramatic shifts in momentum. By keeping contestants in the dark about their own standing, the show delivers a unique layer of tension and mental warfare that sets it apart from traditional survival formats.

The series features a diverse lineup of high-achieving athletes who embody the modern, multidimensional competitor: Olympic swimming champion and sports-science advocate Kosuke Hagino; multilingual figure-skating talent Narumi Takahashi, the first Japanese pairs skater to medal at the World Championships; Tokyo 2020 boxing gold medalist and frog-research specialist Sena Irie; and Olympic judo champion and avid gamer Naohisa Takato, known for bringing gaming inspired strategy and analytical thinking into judo competition. The cast also includes standout personalities from basketball, rugby, volleyball, soccer, track and field, and CrossFit, creating a broad mix of physical styles and competitive mindsets.

Gameplay centers on the dynamic Life Point system. Winners steal opponents’ points, while Life Points double as currency that can be spent on tactical items and competitive advantages. Original hybrid games such as “CUBE MAZE,” “FLASH STEP,” and “NUMBER CLIMBER” test both physical performance and mental speed, reinforcing the show’s “brain and body” identity.

TV Asahi producer Sho Kozawa says: “Our goal with DUAL² was to redefine what a modern competition show can be. Physical strength is only one part of the battle; strategy, psychology, decision-making, and many other mental elements matter just as much. That’s a universal concept audiences everywhere can connect with.”

Designed with international scalability in mind, DUAL² combines visually intuitive rules, adaptable game mechanics, and universally engaging themes of survival and psychological warfare. TV Asahi plans to actively position the title as a next generation global competition format through international markets, format licensing, and co production opportunities. With its unique point stealing economy and built in suspense that keeps both players and viewers guessing, DUAL² emerges as a next generation competition format with strong international potential.
