Belgian formats distributor Primitives has secured worldwide format rights, excluding German-speaking territories, to Terrain: Battle of the Flags, an upcoming adventure reality competition created for German broadcaster ZDF.
Produced by Belgium-based Roses Are Blue, the 10-episode series is set to launch in Germany this autumn. ZDF’s streaming platform will release the first three episodes simultaneously, with the opening episode also becoming available on YouTube on launch day. The second and third episodes will follow on the subsequent two days, while the series will also receive a linear broadcast on ZDFneo.
The format was created by German comedian, actor, writer and YouTube creator Torge Oelrich, better known online as Freshtorge. Developed to mark the 20th anniversary of his YouTube channel, Terrain: Battle of the Flags takes the competitive mechanics and immersive feel of gaming out of the digital world and into a real-life setting.
The competition brings together 10 prominent content creators, who are split into two teams of five. Over several days, they will face a series of challenges in a specially constructed game environment in Scotland’s Highlands, with each team tasked with capturing its opponents’ flag while protecting its own.
Adding to the gaming-inspired concept, the contestants will record much of the action themselves. They will also wear specially designed vests equipped with third-person camera systems, allowing the production to capture the competition from a more immersive perspective and give the series a visual style reminiscent of video games.
The project will extend beyond the main television series through additional content. A dedicated YouTube channel will feature companion programming, while ZDF’s Twitch channel will offer further reaction-based content designed to complement the main show.
Primitives plans to introduce Terrain: Battle of the Flags to international buyers ahead of this year’s Mipcom, positioning the format as a multiplatform entertainment concept aimed particularly at audiences familiar with creator-led content and gaming culture.
