Directed by DC Studios co-chair James Gunn, the Superman film was one of the most anticipated releases of 2025. Rebooting and resetting the DC Universe, the film achieved major box office success in its opening weekend.
On its opening day in the US, the movie grossed $56.5 million, and its weekend total in the US reached $122 million. Globally, the film’s first weekend box office hit $217 million.
With this strong opening, James Gunn set a new milestone for DC. The new Superman film’s debut surpassed the opening of Zack Snyder’s 2013 Man of Steel. Gunn also managed to break his own previous opening records set with the Guardians of the Galaxy films in MCU.
Since the release of Wonder Woman in 2017, DC Studios hadn’t seen an opening surpassing $100 million. Now, after a long break, Superman has claimed the top spot. Following this success in the box, Warner Bros. is expected to greenlight several new projects under DC Studios.
Superman has also earned high scores from both critics and audiences. For instance, the film’s audience score on Rotten Tomatoes stands at 93%, while the critics’ score is 83%. This strong reception suggests the film’s box office momentum will likely continue in the coming weeks.
In addition, Superman has drawn attention for featuring the super dog “Krypto.” Audiences particularly loved Krypto’s role and the unique charm he brought to the film, accompanying David Corenswet, the new face of the legendary character. Meanwhile, Nicholas Hoult, who portrays Superman’s arch-enemy Lex Luthor, has also been praised for his performance.
After this impressive debut, fans are eager to see what’s next for Superman. However, it appears James Gunn currently has other projects lined up for DC Studios.
