Jenna Ortega and Taylor Russell are set to star in the upcoming thriller Single Female, which has now secured its screenwriter.
Award-winning playwright and screenwriter Sarah DeLappe, best known for Bodies Bodies Bodies, will write the script. DeLappe has built a reputation for exploring complex dynamics between young women in her writing. Her acclaimed play The Wolves was a finalist for the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and won the American Playwriting Foundation’s Relentless Award.
Single Female is being developed as a remake of the 1992 psychological thriller Single White Female. The project is produced by 3000 Pictures, a Sony-based studio. The original film starred Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh and followed a woman who takes in a new roommate, only to discover increasingly disturbing and dangerous behavior. The movie became a surprise box-office success and helped launch both actresses into stardom.
In the remake, Ortega and Russell will not only headline the film but also serve as producers. Veteran producer Stacey Sher, known for credits including Contagion and Django Unchained, will produce alongside industry veteran Marisa Paiva, marking Paiva’s first major producing role after years as a studio executive.
Ortega continues to rise as one of Hollywood’s most prominent young stars following her breakout role in Wednesday, while Russell gained widespread recognition for her performance in Bones and All.
With its high-profile cast and experienced production team, Single Female is being positioned as a major priority for the studio as development moves forward.
