Sheila Masterson’s self-published romantasy novel The Poison Daughter is being adapted into a drama series for Hulu.

The project is currently in development and is searching for a writer, with 20th Television producing and Masterson serving as an executive producer.

The story centers on Harlow Carrenwell, whose poisonous kiss instantly kills anyone she touches. Her life takes an unexpected turn when her arranged fiancé, Henry Havenwood, survives her kiss, exposing the dangerous secret behind her double life.

Originally self-published in October 2025, The Poison Daughter became a viral sensation, selling more than 250,000 copies and earning a place on the USA Today Bestseller list three times. The novel was later acquired by Slowburn in April 2026, with hardcover and audiobook editions set for release in the United States and the United Kingdom on August 18, 2026. It is also scheduled to be translated into 20 languages.

The adaptation joins a growing wave of romantasy projects heading to the screen. Hulu previously attempted to adapt Sarah J. Maas’ A Court of Thorns and Roses, though that series was ultimately shelved during development. Meanwhile, adaptations of Fourth Wing, From Blood and Ash, and Shield of Sparrows are also in the works.

If greenlit, The Poison Daughter will join the ranks of successful screen adaptations originating from self-published books, alongside titles such as The Martian, Silo, Heartstopper, After, The Kissing Booth, and My Life with the Walter Boys.

Masterson’s bibliography also includes the gothic fantasy romance Song of the Dark Wood, the The Lost God series, and its standalone companion novel A Legacy of Stars.
