Netflix Axes Duffer Brothers’ Sci-Fi Series ‘The Boroughs’ After Just One Season

In a surprising turn of events, Netflix has officially cancelled The Boroughs, its supernatural mystery series executive produced by Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer, after just a single season.

The swift cancellation, first reported by Deadline, comes less than a month after The Boroughs made its global debut on the streaming giant.

The decision is particularly striking given the show’s initial performance metrics. In its debut week, the series pulled in 5.6 million viewing hours globally before surging to the number one spot on Netflix’s global TV chart with 9.5 million viewing hours during its second week. However, the momentum proved short-lived, as viewership sharply declined to 3.7 million hours the following week, triggering the platform’s infamous cancellation axe.

Created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, The Boroughs is set in a seemingly picturesque retirement community where an unlikely group of elderly heroes must band together to stop an otherworldly force. In a sci-fi twist, this entity seeks to steal the one thing the residents have the least of: time. The series boasted a powerhouse ensemble cast of Hollywood veterans, including Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Denis O’Hare, Clarke Peters, and Bill Pullman. It was executive produced by the Duffer Brothers and Hilary Leavitt via their Upside Down Pictures banner, alongside Addiss, Matthews, and Ben Taylor.

The project originally emerged from a highly publicized, multi-year overall deal between the Duffer Brothers and Netflix. Other notable titles produced under that pact include the limited series Something Very Bad is Going to Happen, which premiered this past March, and the animated spin-off Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, currently gearing up for its second season this fall. Industry insiders note that there had previously been significant internal momentum to renew The Boroughs, with active discussions about filming seasons two and three back-to-back.

While Netflix has not explicitly stated the financial or strategic reasons behind the sudden axe, the cancellation heavily coincides with a major seismic shift in the industry. The Duffer Brothers have officially migrated to Paramount Skydance under a massive, exclusive four-year overall deal that began in April 2026. Covering feature films, television, and streaming projects, the pact is a major coup for the David Ellison-run media company, whose streaming division is currently spearheaded by former Netflix content chief Cindy Holland. This high-profile executive transition likely rewrote the strategic priorities for both studios, leaving The Boroughs as a casualty of the duo’s transition to their new creative home.
