Warner Bros. has released the trailer for Remain, the feature adaptation of M. Night Shyamalan’s bestselling book co-written with Nicholas Sparks. The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Phoebe Dynevor in a story that blends romance with a dark supernatural mystery.
What is Remain About?
Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Tate Gordon, a reclusive architect who moves to a small coastal town in Cape Cod to complete his latest project. There, he meets Wren, played by Phoebe Dynevor, an alluring young woman who draws him out of his shell and into the heart of a deadly mystery hanging over the town.
The trailer shows Tate and Wren growing closer as they bond over board games and spend time together. Yet it quickly becomes clear that something is keeping them apart. Wren asks Tate why they cannot be together, while a series of unsettling moments hints at the supernatural forces surrounding their relationship.
In one scene, a curtain flutters between the pair and Wren suddenly disappears. Later, Tate hears her crying in the bathroom at night and switches on the light as she appears to be hitting her head against the tiled wall. When the room is illuminated, however, the bathroom is empty. The trailer ends with the words “Trust the Unknown,” set to Mitski’s “My Love Mine All Mine.”
What Mystery Lies at the Heart of Remain?
The story follows Tate after he arrives in Cape Cod following a stay at an upscale psychiatric facility, where he was treated for acute depression after the death of his beloved sister. His sister could see spirits, an ability that runs in the family.
As Tate begins to fall for Wren, he discovers that there is far more beneath the surface of her life than he first realized. These secrets threaten their fragile relationship just as it begins to develop. To free Wren from an increasingly desperate fate, Tate must uncover the truth about her past before time runs out.
Who Stars in Remain?
Alongside Jake Gyllenhaal and Phoebe Dynevor, the cast includes Ashley Walters, Julie Hagerty and Jay O. Sanders.
Shyamalan directs from his own screenplay, based on a story by Shyamalan and Sparks. The film is produced by Shyamalan, Ashwin Rajan, Marc Bienstock and Theresa Park, with Sparks serving as executive producer.
Behind the camera, the team includes director of photography Adolpho Veloso, production designer Sam Lisenco, editor Noëmi Preiswerk, costume designer Caroline Duncan, casting director Douglas Aibel, music supervisor Gabe Hilfer and composer James Newton Howard.
When Will Remain Be Released?
Remain will open internationally on February 3, 2027, followed by its North American theatrical release on February 5, 2027. The film had previously been scheduled for October 23, 2026.
The novel was released on October 14, 2025.
