The untitled Caine project, a spin-off from the John Wick universe, is set to begin production next month.
Donnie Yen will not only reprise his role as the blind assassin Caine but also direct the film.
Known for action films like Ip Man, Flash Point, and Hero, Yen has achieved major box office success both in China and internationally with titles such as Star Wars: Rogue One, xXx: Return of Xander Cage, Mulan, and John Wick: Chapter 4.
The story picks up after 2023’s John Wick: Chapter 4, following Caine as he navigates life free from his obligations to the High Table. The screenplay is written by Mattson Tomlin and Michael McGrale, with Tomlin’s previous credits including The Batman Part II and the adaptation of BRZRKR. Rina
Sawayama returns as Akira, acting opposite Yen. The production also brings back John Wick producers Thunder Road, including Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, alongside filmmaker Chad Stahelski and his 87Eleven Entertainment banner, with Yen serving as a producer as well.
Adam Fogelson, chairman of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, noted that fans’ fascination with Caine makes his story a natural next chapter for the franchise. Yen describes Caine as a different kind of action hero, one defined by love, responsibility, and sacrifice in a world built on consequences, aiming to deliver a film that honors what audiences love about John Wick while introducing new emotional depth and a distinct visual language.
