Created by Neil Cross, Luther became one of the most acclaimed crime dramas of the 2010s. Starring Idris Elba as detective John Luther, the series concluded in 2019 after five seasons.
Following the show’s end, Netflix released Luther: The Fallen Sun, directed by Jamie Payne. However, the film received mixed reviews and didn’t quite meet fans’ expectations.
Now, Netflix is moving forward with another Luther movie, and Idris Elba is officially returning to the role. Ruth Wilson, who played the enigmatic Alice Morgan in the series, will also reprise her character after being absent from The Fallen Sun. Dermot Crowley, another familiar face from the series, is set to return as well.
The new film will again be directed by Jamie Payne, with Neil Cross writing the script. Production is expected to begin in February.
This time, the story will follow Luther as he’s secretly brought back to duty after a surge of brutal murders in London. As he investigates, he becomes the hunted, fighting to survive in a city where everyone seems to want him dead.
Payne said:
“Neil has yet again, created a wonderfully dark tale to bring us all back together. It’s a true joy to be back on the streets of Lutherland with the supreme talents that are Idris Elba and Dermot Crowley. I am also thrilled to be reunited with the brilliant and dangerous Alice Morgan played by the extraordinarily talented Ruth Wilson.”
Netflix has not yet announced the release date for the new Luther film.
