Emily Kapnek’s new comedy project Alan Opts Out is officially in development at HBO.
Adapted from Courtney Maum’s recently published novel of the same name, Alan Opts Out series follows advertising executive Alan Anderson, whose life begins to unravel after losing the biggest client of his career. As his grip on reality slips, Alan abandons his fast-paced lifestyle in favor of an unconventional attempt to live off the land in the backyard of his suburban Connecticut home, setting the stage for a satirical exploration of privilege, consumerism, and the search for a more meaningful existence.
Kapnek is writing the adaptation and will also serve as showrunner and executive producer. Bill Lawrence, Jeff Ingold, Liza Katzer, and novelist Courtney Maum are attached as executive producers, with the project produced by Lawrence’s Doozer banner in association with Warner Bros. Television.
The series marks the latest collaboration between HBO and Bill Lawrence, whose comedy Rooster recently secured a second-season renewal following a strong debut earlier this year. Kapnek is best known for creating Suburgatory, Selfie, Splitting Up Together, and Emily’s Reasons Why Not, bringing extensive comedy experience to HBO’s newest development.
