Austin Butler is in early talks to star in Joseph Kosinski’s (Top Gun: Maverick) upcoming Miami Vice reboot for Universal Pictures.
If a deal is reached, Butler will take on the role of James “Sonny” Crockett, originally played by Don Johnson, while Michael B. Jordan will portray Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs, the character brought to life by Philip Michael Thomas in the 1980s TV series.
The first big-screen version of Miami Vice was directed by Michael Mann in 2006 and starred Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx.

The new Miami Vice will be filmed in IMAX and produced by Dylan Clark and Joseph Kosinski. The screenplay comes from Eric Warren Singer and Dan Gilroy, Gilroy is known for Nightcrawler, The Bourne Legacy, and Andor, while Singer previously collaborated with Kosinski on Top Gun: Maverick.
Set in the mid-1980s, the movie will explore Miami’s criminal underworld and themes of corruption, following two undercover detectives as they battle an organized crime network. The story will draw inspiration from the original show’s pilot and first season, echoing the visual style and cultural impact of that era.
