Assassin’s Creed‘s Netflix adaptation finally has a director.
One of the most popular game franchises of all time, Assassin’s Creed, is still being adapted. The Netflix-developed series was first announced in 2020. After a long development process, the director has finally been set. Swedish director Johan Renck, known for his Primetime Emmy-winning work Chernobyl, created by Craig Mazin, will direct the series.
Meanwhile, there are talks that Assassin’s Creed could be set in Ancient Rome, however, this has not been officially confirmed. Netflix has announced that the series will center on the battle between two ancient organizations.
The show will focus on the fight between a group that is trying to control humanity’s future and their adversary, defending free will. However, the conflict will be examined through the turning points in humanity’s history.
Roberto Patino (Westworld, Sons of Anarchy) and David Wiener (Halo, The Killing) are among the creators and executive producers of the show. Gerard Guillemot, Matt O’Toole, Genevieve Jones, Margaret Boykin and Austin Dill will also contribute to Assassin’s Creed as executive producers.
The game series was first launched in 2007. The series has sold more than 230 million copies worldwide. It is between two secret organizations known as “Assassins” and “Templars.” Each game in the series is set against a different historical background.
Assassin’s Creed was previously adapted into a feature film, starring Michael Fassbender. However, this film was widely criticized and received a largely negative response from fans. This raises questions about how the Netflix series will adapt the Assassin’s Creed universe.
