Zach Cregger’s Weapons became one of 2025’s biggest box office hits, grossing nearly $150 million domestically and $263 million worldwide. Now, the director has confirmed that a prequel is officially in the works.
“It is real and I’ve been talking to Warner Bros. about it,” Cregger told Fangoria ahead of the film’s digital release. “There’s a story and I’m pretty excited about it. It’s not bullsh–.”
The filmmaker emphasized that the project isn’t a reaction to movies’ success. “I was ready,” he explained. “I had it kind of in my pocket before the movie came out.”
The prequel will focus on the origins of Aunt Gladys, the sinister character who became viral after the film’s release.
Cregger’s schedule is already filling up: in addition to the Weapons prequel, he is also set to reboot Resident Evil with a new storyline, starring Weapons actor Austin Abrams in the lead role.
