Prime Video has officially announced that its new live-action series based on the best-selling Tomb Raider action-adventure franchise is headed into production. Starring Sophie Turner (Game of Thrones) as Lara Croft, the series will be created, written, and executive produced by Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag, Killing Eve), as first revealed last year.

Produced by Amazon MGM Studios, the project has also added Chad Hodge (Runaway, The Playboy Club, Wayward Pines) as executive producer and co-showrunner, joining Waller-Bridge. Jonathan Van Tulleken (Shōgun) is attached as director and executive producer. Rumors of cancellation had swirled around the project in recent months, fueled by reports of creative differences and Turner’s busy schedule. However, with Hodge now on board as co-showrunner, production is back on track.

Prime Video's 'Tomb Raider' Starring Sophie Turner to Begin Production
Rise of the Tomb Raider (2015), the latest game in the series.

The Tomb Raider franchise follows Lara Croft, a brilliant archaeologist who explores ancient tombs and ruins across the globe. Known for her iconic ponytail and athletic gear, Croft was previously portrayed on the big screen by Angelina Jolie in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) and Alicia Vikander in Tomb Raider (2018).

Now stepping into the role, Sophie Turner shared her excitement:

“I am thrilled beyond measure to be playing Lara Croft. She’s such an iconic character, who means so much to so many – and I am giving everything I’ve got. They’re massive shoes to fill, following in the steps of Angelina and Alicia with their powerhouse performances, but with Phoebe at the helm, we (and Lara) are all in very safe hands. I can’t wait for you all to see what we have cooking.”

Phoebe Waller-Bridge also expressed her enthusiasm:

“I’m so excited to announce the formidable Sophie Turner as our Lara alongside this phenomenal creative team. It’s not very often you get to make a show of this scale with a character you grew up loving. Everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara and are all as outrageous, brave, and hilarious as she is. Get your artifacts out… Croft is coming…”

The series is produced by Amazon MGM Studios, Story Kitchen, and Crystal Dynamics, the developer and publisher of the game series.

Vernon Sanders, Head of Global Television at Prime Video & Amazon MGM Studios, commented:

“Lara Croft is one of the most recognizable and iconic video game characters of all time. We are thrilled to have the wonderfully talented Sophie Turner bring this character to life, defined by her courage, strength, and unshakable resolve. Led by the brilliant Phoebe Waller-Bridge, this series will honor the beloved Tomb Raider legacy while delivering fresh adventures to fans worldwide.”

The production for the Tomb Raider series is set for January 19.
